I recently wrote a huge marketing plan for a new startup website that looks like it will be a big one.
It is interesting to note how different marketing is today to how it was 6 years ago when I last wrote a marketing plan of this type.
SEO work can make a website much more popular and increase visits my a huge magnitude, and yet its "Free" if you know how to do it (or costs just the price of the hours of the SEO expert if you dont). Usually (unless you use a very expensive SEO expert) this is a much more cost effective way of marketing a website than more traditional techniques such as newspapers and tv!
Marketing facts and figures are much easier to find for free on the internet these days too.. Six years ago we had to pay for the kind of information that websites such as Comscore.com provide as press releases for free!
Google Adwords and other sponsored search mechanisms are very cheap ways to target an audience that is actively searching on specific keywords.. and Facebook and MySpace now have great targetted ad mechanisms on their websites in which you can target people by sex, age, education level, marital status, and so many more very useful marketing factors! Again, very cheaply!
Syndicating content via rss feeds and submissions to all the free articles sites as well as social networking sites such as digg.com etc. means that a single article can potentially go viral.. and has the potential to raise a website to the top of the popularity stakes overnight!!
Isnt it amazing that all these mechanisms are now available?
